California’s legislative session has ended and we are excited to share that two of our four priority bills were signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom. With your advocacy, meetings, phone calls, letters, emails, and faith-community organizing, we’ve secured key wins for a cleaner and more equitable California.
With your help, this year we:
1. Passed AB 1866 (Hart) to Plug Toxic Idle Wells! This bill helps ensure that polluters are paying to clean up their own messes, not taxpayers.
2. Passed SB 1053 (Blakespear) to ban the sale of plastic bags at grocery stores. It will also close the loopholes that increased plastic bag production.
3. Advanced the policy conversation on AB 2401 (Ting) Clean Cars for All and SB 615 (Allen) EV Battery Recycling. While these bills made it through the legislature and to the governor’s desk, they did not gain his signature. We are working to find out what the specific objections were. We hope to advance these or similar policies next year. California’s clean transportation policies must ensure equity in accessing EVs and lifecycle responsibility for batteries.
Together, the faith climate voice lifted up vital legislation and successfully helped secure enough support to pass policies that will clean up our environment, prioritizing vulnerable communities. But our work is far from over. We can continue to build on this momentum by passing Proposition 4, a $10 billion water and wildfire bond on the California ballot this November. Thank you again for your faithful advocacy: it made a difference!
