Job Announcement – Tree Equity Project Manager

California Interfaith Power & Light (CIPL) inspires and mobilizes individuals and communities of faith and conscience to take bold and just action on climate change. With over 720+ congregational members across the state, CIPL leads initiatives that address climate impacts, build resiliency, and advocate for environmental justice.
We are seeking an experienced organizer to launch and oversee a large-scale, multi-year project beginning in March 2025 to plant trees in underserved areas. This position offers an exciting opportunity to blend project management expertise, environmental knowledge, and community organizing to build climate resilience in underserved communities.
Position Overview:
The Tree Equity Manager will oversee and manage all aspects of a statewide Tree Equity Initiative, focusing on tree planting, community engagement, and educational outreach. The ideal candidate is a strong organizer and project manager with experience working with faith communities and a commitment to climate justice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Planning and Implementation:
- Develop and manage a detailed work plan for tree planting across multiple sites in Northern and Southern California.
- Coordinate site assessments to evaluate current tree coverage and identify planting locations.
- Community Engagement and Outreach:
- Work with faith-based congregations, schools, and community organizations to engage their participation in tree planting and environmental education activities.
- Build relationships with local stakeholders, including community leaders, government agencies, and environmental groups.
- Monitoring and Evaluation:
- Oversee baseline data collection, including environmental assessments and community surveys.
- Track project metrics, including the number of trees planted, workshops held, and community members engaged.
- Educational and Advocacy Efforts:
- Organize and lead workshops on tree equity principles, climate justice, and the environmental and community benefits of increased tree canopy.
- Collaborate with CIPL staff, board members, and partners to incorporate educational materials into outreach efforts and schedule events.
- Administrative and Grant Management:
- Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables to ensure grant compliance.
- Prepare progress reports and contribute to year-end evaluations and stakeholder presentations.
Qualifications:
- Prefer B.A. or B.S. in Forestry, Environmental Sciences, Urban Planning, or a related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- At least 3-5 years of experience in forestry, urban greening, or related environmental projects.
- Demonstrated project management experience, including managing budgets.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with experience working in diverse communities.
- Knowledge of climate resilience, urban forestry, and/or tree equity principles.
- Experience engaging with faith-based communities or community organizations is a plus.
- Proficiency in data collection, monitoring, and reporting.
- Spanish language skills are a plus.
- A valid driver’s license and ability to travel statewide as needed.
Salary and benefits:
The salary range for this position is $60,000- $70,000 annually, commensurate with experience. We provide full medical, dental, and vision benefits, a retirement account with 3% matching contributions, a generous vacation policy, and half-day Fridays.
