Despite what we see and hear in the popular media, Christmas is but one holy day in December. Holy faith observances include:
**The Jewish celebration of Hanukkah (December 1-9,) which celebrates joy in a time of darkness. The Festival of Lights honors the Jewish people’s struggle to worship God freely.December 16 commemorates Asarah B’Tevet, a fasting day marking the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzer, the King of Babylon.
**The celebration of Muharram (December 7-January 4,) the first month of the Islamic calendar, year 1432. The Day of ‘Ashura (December 16) symbolizes the Islamic liberation from oppression.
**Christmas (December 25,) holy to Christians marking the birth of Jesus – God incarnate in human form.
December is a time in which many faith traditions celebrate light conquering darkness and the overcoming of oppression. Whichever faith tradition you honor, CIPL sends you, your family and friends, and your faith community many blessings in this holy month.
