2024 Advocacy
As the new year begins so does the legislative process. In a few weeks our representatives will submit various legislative bills for us to rally behind; we are excited to see what climate policy is put forward this year. We do know that one of our 2023 priority bills was not denied but delayed so we will be working on getting, bi-directional charging SB 233 (Skinner), passed this year! We also know that Big Oil is attacking SB 1137 (Gonzalez), legislation that passed pushing drill sites away from families, schools, and other residential hot spots – so we have our work cut out for us.

Congress: Pass a Farm Bill!
Far too many people experience hunger in our wealthy nation—including 12 million children who are food insecure. And around the world, the number of people who are severely hungry has increased by 33 percent. Climate change threatens to increase these numbers–as global temperatures and extreme weather events rise, the conditions make it more difficult for farmers to grow food and for those facing hunger to get it. Our current agricultural system contributes to these joint crises—prioritizing corporations’ profits over people and our planet.
The 2023 Farm Bill is a critical opportunity to improve food security and nutrition for people and promote climate resilience in the U.S. and across the world . As Congress begins working on this important legislation, we must urge them to prioritize the needs of our communities and the climate, not corporate profit margins.
In 2023 we focused on five priority bills in California. Three of the five have now been signed into legislation:
- AB 631 (Hart) – Oil and gas: enforcement penalties
- AB 579 (Ting) – Electric School Busses
- SB 49 (Becker) – Solar parking lots (got cut) and highways
